How painful is it to have an IUD inserted?

I've been wanting to get an IUD for a long time because I hate taking the pill but I'm not sure about the insertion process. Is it really painful? And does your partner still have to withdraw even with the IUD? Thanks in advance!

Straight up most pain I've felt, but I didn't have any numbing shots. Some places give those. The pain afterwards lasted for a few days, but it's been great. I've had the skyla one now for over a year, and no serious complaints! The only one I do have is that I still get my period every month :P

It was the most terrible pain I had ever felt 😭 it felt like somebody was ripping my freakin womb open and tearing it inside out! I passed out in the office I was in so much pain but I don't know if it was just me being a baby because I have fibromyalgia and my pain levels are off. Over all it stopped hurting about 6 hours later and I absolutely love it.

I just had one put in thursday and I didn't feel a thing. I have two kids but I've never given birth vaginally and my doctor said most women who have never given birth vaginally feel a lot of pain. So I guess it just depends on your pain tolerance!! But even if it hurts, it's TOTALLY worth it.

And as far as the partner thing goes, it is supposed to be more effective than oral birth control because it should stay constantly in place, rather than maybe taking your pills imperfectly. It's whatever you are comfortable with, but if you are in a stable relationship and you and your partner have discussed it, it should keep you covered - if not, use a backup method!

I won't lie to you - it was extremely painful for me. BUT it's worth it so don't let that deter you. It was only super painful for a couple days, so plan for that just in case. Some women pop right back off the table and are good to go back to work! Everybody is different I suppose. Be sure to time the appt while you're on your period, and eat/take painkillers before you go. I can't speak for hormonal birth control but getting the copper iud has been one of the best decisions I've made. It lasts for 10 years! Good luck!

Honestly having my nipples pierced hurt more than having my Mirena inserted.

Insertion was about 2-3/10. I had no painkillers before or during my insertion, I'm
20 with no kids and have a tilted/retroverted uterus.

I just got mine today and as long as your cervix is open enough, it shouldn't hurt much at all! the worst is when they grab your cervix but it's just a short pinch. take some pain killers ahead of time if you're worried, but this is such a great bc option I hope the pain doesn't scare you away. it wasn't bad at all!
