Brown discharge

Im ttc so when I was late this month I was excited. Then at 3 days late I took a digital pregnancy test which was negative, but nothing happened till day 9 of being late when I started cramping and having discharge that was brown. Usually I'm never late and I've never had brown discharge, is this normal?
