Pitocin after labor? Is this normal?

My doctor says that all women at our hospital get pitocin after birth the reduce bleeding and contact the uterus.  Has anyone else heard of this?  Has anyone else had this done after labor?

All of the hospitals in my area do it to prevent a hemmoraghe instead of waiting till you have a massive blood loss.

A lot of hospitals have routine pitocin after birth, but you can refuse it and tell them you only want it if medically necessary.  I am not a fan of routine anything if I don't need it.

Yes, but it's not necessary. It really should only be administered after labor if you are bleeding a lot or hemmoraging. But of course in the hospital they just give drugs to everyone instead of evaluating people as individuals. Talk to your doctor and see if it's necessary.

No. Even hospital policies are not mandatory. My doula was the one who informed that pitocin is often administered after delivery, even if you didn't have any medical intervention during the babies birth, in order to deliver the placenta. I told my doctor that I DO NOT want any pitocin unless my placenta simply will not come out on its own or in one piece. They administer a whole bag of pitocin in like 30 minutes or less instead of over time. I'd do some research and talk to your doctor and write up a birth plan.

I was given pitocin during my c-section, after baby girl was delivered and they were finishing up. It was awful because it causes a very right chest, felt like I was having a heart attack. Had to be given something to counteract the side effects.

I had to have that but I lost a lot of blood after. But I have NEVER heard them doing it to everyone. That just sounds crazy!

Yep. It's pretty routine unless you specifically ask for none. Got it with both my babies. 😊

I did it today after my csection because I was bleeding so bad they said it would help my uterus contract

I had my baby 10 days ago and they did the pitocin (very small bag) after labor and I didn't feel any difference and I had a great recovery no complications!

I was given a little pitocen to help me with pushing with my first. Then after he was born I got an extra pitocen shot to expel the placenta faster. It came out 5 mins after the baby. Usually the uterus can take 30 mins or so to come out. The contractions help the uterus shrink and reduce the size of the wound left behind by where the placenta was attached. It wasn't so bad.
