What's the earliest you can find out sex?

I called and asked my doctor if there was a sooner way to find out the sex other than waiting until 16-18 weeks and they said no. But I've heard of blood tests you can take? What do I request? I'm okay if insurance doesn't cover it.

My OB offers the Harmony test, and he was told there is a sliding scale option for those who pay cash, with a max out-of-pocket of about $250 but that doesn't include finding out the gender. The Harmony test is intended to check for genetic traits, such as Down's, but you can also pay a little more to find out the gender. Basically these tests are all looking for the same thing. They measure cell-free DNA. With the gender test part of it, they are looking for the X (male) chromosome in your blood, since you start sharing it with the fetus at about 9-10 weeks. 
If all you want to know is the gender, there is another option. It's called Sneak Peek test. I just did mine today and I paid $79. You order the kit and do a finger prick at home, then mail it back to the lab for processing. I should have the results by Sunday. I did a lot of research and this is the same concept used in Harmony, but because there is no genetic component (they can't tell you if the baby has Down's, etc.), it is way less expensive. Also, Sneak Peek offers a money back guarantee if the results are wrong once the baby is born. You can take it as early as 9 weeks. With Harmony, you have to be at least 10. I did a lot of research before choosing which test was best for me. In the end, I'm doing it just for fun, so I'll take the results with a grain of sand if they're wrong. Just keep in mind that my doctor told me even more expensive test like Harmony, or Panorama can be wrong about gender if the procedures aren't followed properly, which is the biggest complaint I've found about the Sneak Peek test. But as I said it's just for fun, at least in my case.

Genetic tests done in the 9-12 weeks will determine. The harmony test is one that looks at chromosomal risks. We are doing that to also find out gender. Your doc is being difficult.

There's a genetic blood test that you can take through your doctor called the Harmony test. Most OB's offer it. You do have to pay out of pocket for it though, so be prepared for that (typically $130-150). It was totally worth it though for us!

I've found  3D ultrasound 'boutiques' that can determine gender at 13 weeks. Try googling in your area for that. ☺️
