My messenger shows a lot of people whom I haven't even messaged or talked to lmao. So you can't even go by that. The updates facebook has done to messenger have ruined it and made it worse in some ways... that being one.

Update I asked him and he said well I spoke to her once and she messaged me once.    So I said well you deleted the message .    He said because he was cleaning up his messages ;mind you it has messages from a year ago. Any way he got mad and asked if I'm jealous of her. How rude!!!!
