Smoking weed for back pain

My bf just told me he smokes when his back hurts and it's really not like him. He doesn't do drugs and barely even drinks. Is it true that it can help with back pain? He was in a car accident years ago and his back has always hurt from it and he's a contractor so that doesn't help. I'm trying not to worry about it.
