Baby shower... Does it feel wrong?

Am I the only one that feels like a baby shower is about asking people to get your baby stuff? It just feels wrong to be that inconvenience. When we conceived we were at a comfortable financial point. we have had huge emergencies where we are no longer at that comfy spot. I had not planned to have a shower at all. I did a gender reveal instead (no obligations for gifts). Now my boss wants to have a baby shower for me for both coworkers and family. I feel like with my current situation it looks like I am asking for hand outs. I have mentioned before that I was uncomfortable with this but I got looked at like I was insane... Am I insane?

I feel the same way. We aren't in a super situation financially, but I would rather use the hand-me-downs we've received, and get the rest at thrift stores to avoid people spending their money on us.

So, instead of a traditional shower, we negotiated with our families to have a 'library shower' where guests bring only an unwrapped new or second-hand book for the baby, and write a message for the baby on the inside cover. This way, there is a fun and unique party, the messages of best wishes are preserved and enjoyed many times, and I don't feel like I'm receiving a hand-out just because we've decided to have a baby.

I felt very similar to you.  When we got married I didn't have a shower for same reasons and for our baby we wanted to party with people but not "force" gifts.  We decided to throw a summer BBQ.  We specifically said in our FB invite it wasn't a shower.  We didn't tell people about registry/what we needed etc.  Well our friends and family surprised us and 27/30 people who came brought gifts AND somehow wrangled me into opening them in front of everyone.  It was very heartwarming.

Baby showers dot have to be about gifts. It's about celebrating he up coming life that will soon be blessed upon your life. You can make it clear that presents aren't expected and if they insist on having a party to make it more about the baby and less about the presents.

I don't see anything wrong at all with having a shower and being happy with ppl giving gifts. Showers can serve diff purposes for diff circumstances. Some ladies may have them just as a way to gather friends and family and have food and just celebrate and really don't want or need gifts. Other moms may truly need every single gift they receive because they cannot afford otherwise. Whatever your situation, at the end of the day it's about celebrating ur baby and it's ok to do what you feel comfortable with.

I agree with your original thoughts that I really feel like most baby showers are people being greedy asking for gifts. That being said, if you are in need of things for the baby, go ahead and let your boss throw you a shower. If you're uncomfortable with having it be a big affair maybe just have it be a work thing without family.  Either way, I don't think you'd be wrong for accepting the offer given your financial situation.
