Husband/wife disagreement

I have always wanted a pet. My parents never let me have anything other than a fish growing up. So now that I am an adult, married, with no kids, getting a house, and can care for a pet financially I really want to get a cat.

My husband just broke the news to me that he absolutely hates cats and that he cannot live in the same house as a cat. He said he wouldn't mind getting a dog but a cat is out of the question.

I was offering an agreement of me getting a cat and him getting a dog and having them grow up together. He said no.

Honestly I do not think it is fair that he gets to call the shots, said if I get a cat it has to be outdoors, wbich i dont really see the point of that. The cat doesn't need much as far as getting potty trained like a dog would. They know how to go in the litter box as soon as they are born. They don't require much and they still are lovable. And with a dog I know he's going to leave all the responsibility to me as far as cleaning up and all that. I am NOT up for cleaning dog pee and it's poop all over the place. My husband works a lot so I really want a cat to keep me company so the house won't be lonely.

Anyway, it's been an argument every time it comes up. Has anybody experienced this before??? Should i just give in to something i truly want, or should he have to suck it up? Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.
