Hair help pease

I have thick ass hair it's very wavy and it used to be Curly but now it's just so crazy and it's dead so I need to cut it but if I cut it then it will probably be sooooo poofy so does anyone have any suggestions to help me out lol or products ? I know I need to cut it but what happens if its extremely poofy ?
