Bleeding after birth. TMI

Okay so how do you know if you're on your period or still bleeding from giving birth?? There has been 2 times when I stopped bleeding for a little bit and then I'm back at bleeding again. This last time I stopped bleeding for like 4 days and I just started to get some orange lookin stuff. My periods are usually heavy with lots of blood clots, and super dark red. Do I wait till my period is like that again?
