birth control pill

Hey eve family! I'm wanting to start birth control because my boy friend and I are sexually active. I'm wondering how long I will have to be on the pill before it is effective? Also, what is the easiest way to get it? Do I have to schedule a visit to the doctor? I hear it's not yet over the counter in the state of Floruda. Thanks in advance!
