Sick on Metformin?

Question

Does anyone else get really sick when taking metformin? I get very nauseous and either vomit or get diarrhea when I take it. I have more energy after a while of taking it but with my school and work schedule, I can't just cross my fingers and hope I don't get sick in the middle of class or during a shift (I'm a waitress) so half the time I don't take it. Is there a trick to taking it or any alternatives?

Yes and I took it for a year and it didn't get better. So I got prescribed a slow release form of it :) much better.

I'm on 2000 mg of the extended release, and I still can't tolerate it, I've tried lower doses and still terrible side effects. hopefully you have better luck than I did!

Yes but I found by eating a low glycemic and gluten free diet I have zero side effects.  It's only when I have too many refined sugars or starchy carbs that I get sick (example.. Thanksgiving, I was very sick the next day).  I go on Pinterest all of the time for recipes and found so many good ones!  Good luck!

The longer you take it, your system gets used to it. You have to power through the sick stage really, I've had to do it with classes. It gets easier after a few weeks, in the meantime, you can try things that can help to ease the sickness.

I'd try to take it with food, and split up the doses as much as possible.  It should just take. Week or two before your body gets used to it.  Good luck!

Eat kinda a big meal when you take it. I was the same way but after a week of taking it I don't get sick anymore.

In the morning time, I eat breakfast and wait about 20 minutes after I eat to take it. & I take my other pill before bed. Call your doctor who prescribed it & ask for zofran for nausea. It works wonders.

Yup I always get a stomach ache from it!  I haven't vomited but frequently get diarrhea.  I have a gluten allergy and find when I mix gluten and metformin is when I feel the worst.  Tums usually help me.  Feel

Also I take it with my biggest meal of the day and I take it as soon as I finish eating.
