It's to make it easy for you to see the difference in temperatures in your follicular phase (before you ovulate) and the luteal phase  (after you ovulate) it is basically to track your ovulation and the next 14-16 days until you get your period or a bfp. Your post ovulation temps will be higher than the pre ovulation ones, and the cover line should help you to track it.
