Possible PCOS

I contacted my Dr after having very long (3weeks or longer) painful periods and voiced a concern that it might be PCOS because it runs in my family. Dr didn't seem too concerned and placed me on birth control. This is very frustrating to me because I've been TTC for 16months. For those with PCOS, how were you diagnosed? And how are you dealing with/treating symptoms?
