How does that happen?

Question

Why or how does a babys umbilical cord get wrapped around theyre neck? Ived heard and have family members whos that happen to theyre baby when theyre born its a scary thought and feeing i have about a week left and just scared of labor and what might happen to my baby. I wanna know if i can prevent it or does it happen by itself?

I don't think you can really prevent it, it's just luck... I mean, it's free floating n the sack with ur baby, I don't think u could stop it if u tried.

This might make u feel better though:
My sister was born with it around her neck, but she didn't choke because it was a bit longer than usual (before that I had never even considered that they had an average length) and because of that the doctor was able to unloop it from her neck during delivery :)

So even if it happens, it doesn't mean the worst

My son was born with it wrapped around his neck twice. And he's perfect. So try not to stress!

Can't prevent it. It's a cord that floating around with a wiggly baby. If it wraps, then it wraps unfortunatly. Doctors know what to do in that situation though. It's one of those things that won't do you any good to worry about

My 2 siblings and I were born with our cords around our necks. Nothing you can do to prevent it. But we were all three perfectly fine and healthy just didn't get placed on my mom right away.

This is a fear of mine all the time also.

It isnt necessarily something you can prevent but a big tell tale sign is your babys movements suddenly decreasing or dramatically increasing. This is a huge signal that your baby is in distress so you should always monitor your babys movements. You know what their pattern is and what is normal for then...see the doctor if you have any concerns. Babys are generally moniyored regularly through labour so if they notice any irregularities in babys heart rate or anything they are well trained to react so just try not to overthink it.

It can't be prevented but the cord is actually really long so it's difficult for them to choke or for it to get tight!

My 5 year old girl had hers in a knot she was and is perfectly fine only thins is I had no epidural so she came fast only 3 pushs Docter said if I was to push longer the cord could have tightened up I'm happy I didn't have an epidural I did with my frist 2 and pushed for and hour to two

My DD had an extra long cord when she was born. It was around her neck twice and around her body 3 times! My midwife told me she had never seen a cord that long before. She was fine once she was out but her heart rate had dropped during the delivery due to the cord being wrapped around her body and neck.

How does that happen?
