Laughing Gas during labor?

Question

Has anyone used laughing gas/nitrous oxide for relief during labor?  Or known anyone who has?  Or plans to?  I'm very interested in it, and our hospital is just beginning to use it for labor in September this year, so info has been limited at this point.  Any thoughts, comments, experiences are appreciated!

One of the least dangerous pain management "drugs". Worth a try the effects aren't long lasting so if you don't like it you can do something different

I used gas n air with my first baby and it was great for me!! Made me deal with pains and nerves alot better... You literally breath it in and out instead of breathing normally... Just as the contraction is building. It last for a few seconds unless you keep using it then it keeps working if that makes sense. It makes you go slightly light headed at first and some people it makes them throw up! but as it only last a few seconds, if it's not right for you, you don't have to keep using it. I would defo recommend it and I will be using it for this baby

They used it back in the day before they had epidurals.  Funny how it's coming back.

The hospital I am birthing at has it. They said it can be used with or without the epidural. Most do.it because of anxiety issues with other pain relief. Not sure if I want to do it or not. Just seems like something that would take away me knowing what is actually going on with labor and delivery. I'd rather go with an epidural, that just takes away the pain under breasts but you are fully aware of what is going on.

I have not used it however I am planning on trying it out during my labor. The advantage over an epidural for me is I have control and can still feel some stuff, the epidural is not 100% guaranteed to work and I am fearful of that. I don't want to say I don't want an epidural however I'd like to try without it first. The drawback that I see is I have to be close to the wall connection, can't be in the tub and can't use it if I've had iv pain Meds 2 hr before. But in glad to have options!

Haven't heard of it being used during labor. I've been given it for some dental appointments.  Take laughing gas whenever it is offered to you.

The patient breathes in the gas at the start of a contraction, timing it so they receive the most pain relief at the peak of the contraction.  The gas wears off within a few breaths after inhaling, so the effects end with the contraction.  This is an advantage over the narcotics, which can linger in the mom and newborn – making both sleepy and even affecting the baby’s ability to breastfeed.”

While it doesn’t provide the complete pain relief of an epidural, N2O can be a good option for mothers looking to “take the edge off” their intense contractions during the labor process.

N2O is also a good option for mothers who arrive too late to receive the epidural, or those that can’t have one due to other medical issues, such as low platelets.
