Hair opinions, PLEASE!

My hair was dark brown for 4 years, I finally did something different. I dyed it burgundy. I ended up with hot roots but it didn't look real bad. My roots were just a bit lighter. My extensions match my root color. So unless I JUST dyed my hair, touched it up, and keep it vibrant every other week, they won't match my extensions and it ends up lookin awful. Red hair is hard to keep up on. After the second week, I have to dye it again to keep it vibrant. I love the burgundy, I just don't know how I'd get the darker ends to match my roots. When my hair color starts fading, the ends of my hair start looking like a dark redish brown and then the roots look rusty red. I don't want to go back to dark brown, I mean I like it, but I'm so used to it. But I've also always thought of a light brown/almost blonde. And I feel like it'd be easier to do that if my hair was all a simple dark brown shade. Rather than a ton of different red shades. It's hard to get out anyways. I can't afford to go to a salon, and I love the red/burgundy. I just don't know how to match my ends with my roots. (Roots are very grown out, 5 inches) when curled everything blends and looks quite nice, until like I said, a week or two after dyed. Thoughts, opinions on what I should do? I'm not against going back dark. I just like the red, and maybe in the next year having light brown hair and want to know the right steps to take care of this at home
