Baby monitors

We have a 3 year old now and still have a baby monitor in her room. My boyfriend was told by her daycare teacher that we most definitely should not have one any more in her room. But our reasoning is that we feel safer being able to hear her. Especially the times she has fallen out of her bed in the middle of the night. What do you all think about baby monitors and how long to keep them around?
