Do you wash all new baby clothes before first wear?

I have heard that some people wash all new babies clothes prior to the baby using them for the first time. And now I am wondering whether this is a must or no, and would like to know what other mums do.

Absolutely. You don't know where they've been, what they've touched, how nasty the floors that they're set down on or that they fall on are. Too many risks with germs. Not my cup of tea!

Absolutely. There are chemicals used to make clothes. When clothes come in from the manufacturer, they have a strong smell a lot of times before being aired out. Plus, thousands of people likely thumbed though those clothes on the rack....who knows if they washed their hands after the bathroom or if they had snot on their hands, you just don't know. However, I'm leaving tags on clothes and on original hangers unless I know I'm gong to use them, since I went way overboard at carters the other day. (Hold their resale value better that way)

I did just because you never know how clean clothing is when it's been hanging on a rack in a store handled by who knows how many people, or sitting in a warehouse somewhere. But I actually did not use any special detergent like Dreft or Tide Free & Clear. I just used the same detergent and fabric softener I used for all of our laundry. When I met our pediatrician, he told me there was really no need to use special detergents unless the baby showed any kind of reaction to the regular stuff, and there was never any problem.

I plan on washing everything new or used! Just a preference really! I'm peculiar and take precautions because it's our first baby! :)

Definitely wash them. I used to work at a distribution center for a large retail store...a lot of that clothing comes into contact with chemicals, dust, dirt and all sorts of crap. It may look clean...but I assure you it isnt.

These clothes are typically made in large factories in 3rd world countries or poor conditions unfortunately, they are not very sanitary. Not to mention other shoppers or store workers stocking the clothes or handling them. I'm not a germ phobe but definitely wash all baby clothes.
