Buying an engagement ring together? Stories?

Tomorrow my boyfriend and I are going to Kay Jewelers to get an engagement ring. We're going there because they have the best deal when it comes to financing. We aren't traditional in the least. We have lived together for over 2 years, have been together for roughly 6, and we've talked about getting married before. It's something we both want. And an engagement ring is such a large purchase, I want to make sure it's something I like and so does he. Anyway, my only drawback with the whole thing is that it lacks romance. I still want him to pop the question. I still want the cliche stuff to an extent (even though I know it's coming). How do we still make it romantic? Also, what do we expect when we go to buy an engagement ring? Like literally tell me the dumbest things you can think of lol. Neither of us have done this before😂 help!

You should go and pick out three that you love. Let him pick out THE one and have him ask you to marry him at a different time.

We looked @ several places together, I tried on A LOT of rings, I'm not a traditional person & I didn't want a diamond or for the main stone to be round so I really needed to help him w/ picking it out. We found 1 we both liked @ a price we were both comfortable w/ & he went ahead & purchased it, it needed to be sized so we couldn't take it home that day. A week later he went to pick it up, I didn't go in w/ him, when he came out he said that actually it wasn't ready & we'd have to wait a little longer, I was sooo bummed, we went to lunch & he fumbled in his coat pocket & the box fell out on the floor he goes "How did that get in there?" picks it up, sticks it back in his pocket & continues eating. I'm laughing & smacking his arm & saying something like "You're a terrible person!" He continued to tease me w/ the ring like that the rest of the day, that night he waited until we were cuddled up in bed in the dark, & then turned towards me, gave the sweetest most genuine little speech & then placed the ring in my hand. Sooo it is still possible to have romance & suprise when picking out your own ring! Good luck & post pics when u get yours!

I picked out my ring a year before we got engaged. And pointed out every chance we get. It was still just as romantic and exciting when he proposed. And I LOVE my ring

I didn't want a big production, I think my actual words were "Please don't do anything embarrassing in public and for the love of God don't make this big emotional speech about your feelings."
