Scheduling the glucose test

So I'm a working mom to be. I am also high risk, so I have to keep taking off full days from work to accommodate all my appointments. It's getting very frustrating because I'm trying to save up time for when the baby will be here.
So they tell me they can schedule the glucose test and be prepared to stay there for 2 full hours. I'm like really?? Should I just not work and go to all these appointments?? She then tells me I can go on a Saturday, but I can't eat after midnight, I can only have a few sips of water and the first appointment they have is 10:45am. Im like are you insane??  I'm scheduling this 6 weeks out as well. Has anyone else had these issues scheduling this? I'm about to forego the test at this point...

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 12 weeks.Definitely do the test. The risk u pose to yourself and your baby if u have it is way more important than work. I fasted from midnight the night before and felt so ill by the time I could the following afternoon.I'd say fasting for a few hours before would be sufficient as ur sugars would have settled by then X

As for the test i had to take two. First one was an hour didnt have to fast. Second one i was there for like 3 and a half hours and i had to fast for 8 hours prior was allowed water before. And a couple sips during. 4 pokes. Before drink to see base line levels and three hours following which out of those 3 i had two high levels. By the time i was done it was lunch time and i was hungry. I ate my food fast.

Ohh that sounds horrible, I booked mine in 2 weeks out and got in at 7:30am on a Friday morning, you have to stay the 2 hours as there will be 3 sets of blood tests. From what I hear it can make you feel nauseous and unwell for the most part of the day. Maybe try another clinic.

All these women are correct in their situation and experience. It's slightly different everywhere due to to Dr's preferences and the particular lab you're using. My best advice? Call the lab, ask them the ACTUAL requirements on the fast for that particular lab, the actual test that's ordered and you're Dr's desires. In my experience, most will be willing to work with you and if you explain your situation I'm sure you can come up with something. At the very least you can ask how long of a fast they really need for the rest. Most of them require 10 hrs. Good luck!

I find all these differences so weird! I was told just not to have a bunch of sugar or carbs before my appt but protein and diary were fine. I also find scheduling appointments difficult... Thankfully I can just make up the hours by staying late but there are so. many. Appts.

I was told same thing.. I scheduled mine at 2 in afternoon and she said just don't eat carbs.. Thank goodness! I just hope and pray it comes back normal!

Same here she said I can have an egg and veggie omelette for breakfast with water and for lunch a grilled chicken salad. My app is last afternoon though since I scheduled it for after work. But I don't have to fast and I'm happy about that

Drink water.  It's important to be hydrated. If you are dehydrated, your veins will be harder to find.

I'm high risk and I'm about ready to be asked to be taken out on leave bc of appts. I miss at least 1 1/2 days a week from work for appts and I'm only 21 weeks. I have my fmla but lordy...I'm not getting paid that time. My doctor has warned me it'll get worse. She recommended I take off for the glucose test though I'll do it at 24 weeks. Good luck I know it sucks!!!

I had my first at 13 weeks because I'm high risk and I couldn't eat after midnight but I could drink as much water as I wanted before and during the test because that doesn't affect the glucose absorption. Mine started at 830 and the last of the three blood draws was 1030. I was still quite nauseous having it done so early in pregnancy and it was really hard I kept throwing up in my mouth and had to try to keep it in and swallow it back down which was gross. I went to work after it was all finished at about 11am (after I'd had a quick breakfast) but I felt terrible for the whole day and I'm a nurse and it's definitely not the way you want to feel with a physical job on your feet. I have to do it again in 3 weeks and I'm definitely not going to work that day.

I did my glucose test last week and there were no restrictions on food/ beverages in advance. They recommended I not do a high sugar breakfast but that was it. After I finished the sugar drink, the lab tech just said to not having anything but water during the hour before they drew my blood. Can't imagine a doctor making a pregnant woman fast! That's dangerous considering how hangry I'd be without food for that long!!

You have to fast if that one is high. I had to do the longer one and had to fast for 8 hours before hand
