Long distance relationships

I've been talking to this guy and we both want to make it official, but we are scared to start something because of the distance. We decided to wait a while and if things are still working then we'll get together and if not we will separate. I really like him and I don't want to lose him. How do I keep him entertained through distance ? Or what are something that you and your S/O do to stay close? Any advice is helpful...
