Advice to mommas who plan on breastfeeding.
Somethings I wish I knew or had been told. My LO is 11 days old and iv been breastfeeding exclusivity since her birth - it's been really hard and more painful than my c section recovery but I wanted to share some things I wish I knew in hindsight or things that gave really helped!
1) have a nurse or even better (if your hospital provide it) a lactation consultant come help you ASAP after birth. I couldn't breastfeed for a food 6 hours after my c section due to being really sick - when I got to postpartum room I tried breastfeeding thinking baby would just hop on the boob - the nurses just assumed I knew what I was doing. This ended up with bad latching habits for the next 12 hours until a new nurse finally sat down and helped me however by this time the damage was already done my nipples were cracked and bleeding and I had a baby that was still learning to latch. So get help and make sure that your working on the latch from the very beginning.
2) limit visitors, especially ones your aren't comfortable getting your boobs out nifty on of. This is something people did tell me and I was like ok whatever i want people to come seems baby. No. You'll be feeding on demand so at any given tend baby will need to be fed and it's the most inconvenient thing having visitors come in and out wanting to hold your crying hungry baby and if your anything like I was, feeding wasn't a quick session I could do in between visitors, it took my forever to find the right latch and a good hour to feed her.
3) boppy pillow really does work wanders
4) other products I highly recommend especially for sure nipples - Epsom salt bath (1tbs Epsom salt to one cup of water let your boobs soak for a while) comfort gels (these are heavenly immediately after a feed) lanolin by Madela and you will need some sort of lads to put in your bra because you will leak!
I am in no way an expert or anything I fact I'm still struggling a lot with the feeding but it's improved heaps and bounds since the beginning and I'm so glad iv stuck it out knowing it will get better! I just wish I had known about all of the above from the get go and maybe I would of avoided such pain and discomfort.
Good luck mommas who are breastfeeding! It's hard but you can totally do it!
