Bilirubin?

Question

Any other moms going thru this or have gone thru this with their newborn? How is this cured?  Need some words of encouragement. My baby after being 24 hours old she had a 10.1 level of bilirubin in her system and then elevated to a 11 , after some lights they had her under it reduced to a 9 then later to a 8. Went to our first pediatrician visit yesterday and Doctor said he still seen some yellowish of skin still so sent us to the hospital to get blood drawn. Blood results came back and it was a level 9. Doctor said it came back good. This is my first born baby and I'm very scared about this I've been searching things like crazy. I just seriously need to hear other stories about this how was it cured and how is the baby doing now . I'm so scared for my baby

My daughter had jaundice after she was born last week. Her level was at a 10 about 24 hours after birth, so the NNP made the decision to start phototherapy. That was the worst night of my life. Not being able to hold my daughter for more than 20 minutes at a time was horrible. And that whole 20 minutes was spent trying to force her to breastfeed and then supplementing her with formula. It was the worst. After 6 hours in the lights, she had only come down to 9.9. And the guys that were drawing her blood were awful -- she had so many sticks in her feet because they couldn't get enough blood from her. She stayed under the lights for an additional 10 hours, and finally her levels were down to 8.5. They took her out of the lights, and tested her 15 hours later -- she had only gone up to 8.9. She is doing great now -- breastfeeding is finally going well and I have a large supply in the freezer since they made me pump so much in the hospital.

My daughter's jaundice was caused by our incompatible blood types -- I am O+ and she is A+. Do you know what caused your child's jaundice? It will get better. I know it is stressful and traumatic -- I've been there -- but your baby will do just fine if you listen to the doctors and do what they recommend. Best of luck, mama.

My son is 2 weeks old and yesterday was his last bilirubin test and it finally came back 5.4 he was very high like yours after 24 hours. The pediatrician in the hospital and my son's family dr suggested I mix my breastmilk with formula (50-50) then every other bottle give him a straight formula bottle to help flush his system...he slept more when his bilirubin was high and had 'bili poop's as they called for for 2-3days but now he's fine.

My baby was 10 something at her first Drs appointment and they said they don't get worried until your baby is at I think 21. Your little one is fine don't worry 😊

jaundice is extemely common in newborns, and 10-11 level is not too serious. 
my boy's level is 7.5 on the face and 11 on the body, we just give him some water, take him for 5 minute sunbathing (with eyes covered) and it's getting better. 
it could take up to 3 weeks to completely go away.

The bilirubin level is expected to rise (so a level of 9 at 48 hours is worse than a level of 9 at 4 days old). There's a chart we reference to assess risk level that compares age and Bili levels. If the doctor says it's ok at this point it probably is. Bilirubin is excreted through urine so good eating and peeing/pooping helps

My little girl was born August 2nd. The next day they tested her and bili levels were elevated. They put her on a bili blanket which was nice cuz i could still hold her with the blanket and cord attached. After a night of phototherapy and feeding her supplimentation every 2 hours, her levels went up even more. I begged to go home, so they sent me home with the bili blanket that I had to keep on her as much as possible until we could see the pediatrician. After our first visit and another blood test, her levels went up a little more, but not drastically, so they recommended her to stay on the blanket over the weekend. After eating a bunch, using indirect natural light, and the bili blanket, her levels dropped below a 10 and she was allowed to be free of the blanket. Thank goodness! I was beginning to worry, but it is common. It's something that doctors like to nip in the butt before it gets out of control, because super high levels, like above 18, can be very dangerous. I had to feed her every two hours with booby and supplimentation in order to make her poop. The more she pooped the better, because this also helped lower levels. The goal is to get to that mustard Yellow poop. Also, keep your baby in as much indirect natural light as possible. Really helps. It will go away, and when it does your baby should be fine. :)

I work in a pediatric unit in a hospital .. hyperbilirubin is very common .. it is treated with the lights with helps break down the enzymes .. for it to climb back to 9 after a few days in totally common .. there is a "bili calculator" that they plug the numbers into (number of bilirubin and hours of life) and it will come.back if its a low , intermediate, or high risk and they base treatment ofd of that.. a low risk they usually just let it go an intermediate risk they keep a close eye on.it with probable blood.draws for a few days and a high risk is usually readmitted for more light therapy .. good luck to you and your little one
