Work Trouble
I'm sorry that this is a little long, but I'm pretty upset and need some opinions.
I work retail loss prevention, and have worked for the same company and boss since 2009, with a 2 year gap where I explored other career options, then was welcomed back with open arms once I decided nothing compared to my LP job. I'm now almost 31 weeks pregnant, and have been very transparent with my boss the entire time because I trust him, and we have a fantastic relationship. I have helped him to find coverage for my position for when I'm gone on maternity leave, and have told him that I will be returning to work after my 12 weeks is up. This is where things started to change. He was surprised that I was going to take all 12 weeks of unpaid leave, and tried to convince me that taking only 8 or 9 weeks would be sufficent. I told him that I wouldn't budge, and he dropped the issue.
Yesterday I mustered up the courage to talk to him about my work schedule after I return to work. The daycare that I have found is close to my house, which is an hour from work, I commute everyday. All of our neighbors use this daycare and love it, so I trust it. Plus it is the only one I can afford. The only problem is that it closes at 6pm, and is open M-F. As anyone who has worked retail knows, the schedule can vary and includes many nights and weekends. I told him that I would need to work M-F 830-430 so I can ensure that I get to the daycare before 6 (accounting for the awful traffic at that time. ) I said that I know that's not a normal retail schedule, but that I'm hoping since I'm the supervisor of a team that as long as I can still complete my work in those hours and have my strong team cover the nights and weekends that it'd be okay. He said that it's not a retail schedule, but that we would deal with it after the baby is born.
My concern now is not knowing if I'll have a job when I get back from maternity leave because he didn't give me an answer. I don't want to sit and wait until she's born, then find out that I will not be welcome back and have to try to find a job quickly while on leave. What would you all do? Try to find another job just in case? Maybe just push the issue, and insist on a definite answer? I'm feeling lost and really bummed. 😯 I love my job and want to keep it, but he might not accommodate the schedule that I need, even though I know I can do the same job, just at different times.
