Doctor or midwife?

Question

Somebody had told me a midwife doesn't have as much expierence as a doctor would, because they don't go nearly as long as a doctor? Is this true? & if so at any point through your pregnancy could you switch to a doctor? When I was pregnant with my first I had a regular doctor. I'm just wanting to know the pros and cons of it.

I'm going with a midwife practice and I agree with everything that everyone else has said. I started my pregnancy with an MD practice and felt it was too much for a low risk pregnancy. Honestly the level of care feels the same having experienced both. Also, just to clarify, a certified nurse midwife has a master's degree (similar to a nurse practitioner). Either way you're in good hands.

I've had both an OB and a Midwife during this pregnancy. Based on my personal experience, I prefer a Midwife. I had a Midwife with my first pregnancy, and everything went great.   She was very patient and understanding. With this pregnancy, I started with an OB but they always seemed to be in a rush.  I just switched to a Midwife and met her during my last appointment. She also seems to be very patient and appears to have more passion for what she does. I guess the decision pretty much depends on how you wish labor to be. If you want interventions, a Dr might be a better option for you. I am going for a natural birth, so a Midwife is a better fit for what I desire.

From my understanding, the main difference between a midwife and an OB is that the OB is trained in the potential surgical procedures associated with pregnancy (such as C-sections) and the midwives typically are not. That being said, if you are a low risk pregnancy, a midwife is really all you need!

I'm not sure what the training is for a midwife, but they are very experienced when it comes to pregnancy, labor, delivery and postnatal care. They will actually stay with you for your whole labor rather than a doctor who comes in at the end. The only thing midwives can't help with his high risk labor or pregnancy, because they are limited when it comes to interventions. Just do some research on what kind of birth you want. If you want a home or water birth, you need to stick with the midwife.

I started off with a midwife but since me and my husband decided on the C section we switched over to a doctor. But u definitely liked my midwife she was very nice

Midwife/doctor doesn't necessarily tell you someone's experience... However, a doctor can use suctioning tools and such if need be... 
I prefer a doctor because if something happens they can do it... Where as a midwife gives you more support but can't do as much! Typically if you have a midwife though there is a doctor near by just incase... You just may have to wait longer depending on your circumstances...

I think both have pros and cons... It's all about what is most important to you!

Well they don't. A midwife is a nurse with extra training & a doctor is a doctor. Dr's are supposedly better trained which is why they are paid more. My midwives only handle pregnancies & deliver babies. They are very experienced in that aspect but they don't do c-sections or high risk pregnancies so there's obviously a difference there. The midwives I use definitely don't act like what people picture midwives acting like either. Each visit they spend 5 minutes with me & when I'm in labor they run from room to room, check in on me occasionally & only come in when it's time to deliver the baby. In my opinion the only difference is the education & ability to handle higher risk.

If your higher risk you tend to have a doctor. I don't believe that doctors know more, think it depends on the individual (midwife, doctor)
