What are your feelings about no homework in schools?

Today, after checking my 2nd graders folder after school, we received a letter from her teacher stating that she will not be giving homework. She personally has read all the studies for this and of course I have as well.

Times have certainly changed since I went school and had homework every single night! Last year, my daughter who was in first grade had a 6 page packet to complete every single night for the next day to return! It was a struggle but we got through it.

The studies show that this will limit stress on the child, the child will get a better nights rest, be more productive throughout the day, and overall have a happy healthier child!

I totally believe this! Although, I will still have my child read for 15-20 minutes a day and throw in a couple worksheet that I provide myself, this is a brilliant idea, in my opinion. Shocked me at first, but definitely for it.

Homework should only be class work that wadnt finished in class, or like projects that take about a week.

I agree with no homework. Children spend so many hours in school already, why give them more work to do at home as well. There are other things I need to do with my kids when they get home.

I'm a teacher and I assign play for homework. I definitely do enough in a day so my students don't need to do more when they get home, research supports that homework really does nothing for students except take time away from them being kids. Plus, I'd rather be able to provide immediate responses to student work, like I can in class. Feedback on homework is delayed and therefore pretty worthless. Plus, let's be honest, nobody has time to grade 6 pages per student a night. If I can't grade it in a night, I'm surely not going to assign it to a poor kid to do in a night.

Yay for a teacher that actually reads and follows research!!! I think it's crazy that teachers "educate" but can't actually take the time to be educated themselves. You should pay this teacher to follow your child through elementary school!

I think if they don't finish their class work in class, they should bring it home. But being given extra work with taking it home in mind, I do not agree with. No homework is a great policy that all teachers should implement.

Gosh I wish our school would do this. Its a magnate school and the homework for our 1st grader is INSANE. It takes one hour to do it all. Writing vocabulary words twice, writing 5 sentences or questions using those words, do 5 math problems, a phonics work sheet, and finally.... last night he had to....DRAW THE NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT AND LABEL IT.

He has homework 4 days a week and this 1st grade teacher shows no mercy for minor mistakes. She marks "Focus!!!" and "Practice more!!!" all over his work. She and I are going to clash big time at the first student/teacher meeting, I can promise that.

My 3rd grader doesn't have homework for math (although they still send a worksheet home and they can do it if they want, but doesn't have to turn it in). But is instructed to read at least 20 minutes a night and write 3-4 sentences afterward about what they read...which they do turn in.

I don't see the benefit of it. Kids are in school long enough during the day. They should have plenty of time to practice what they're learning and if they don't maybe that's a sign that we're trying to make them learn too much too fast. Kids need time to play and relax. And parents also deserve time with their kids to spend as they see fit. I think after school hours should be family time, not multiplication table time.

I do think that the occasional at home project can be beneficial though if it's not a frequent thing, it's not over the top and it enhances learning the subject. And I think it's important for parents to know what their kids are learning so they can help reinforce it in their daily lives, but then send home a sheet of suggested activities (like a board game that teaches numbers or books about the science concepts their learning) that parents can implement how and if they want to. I know that once my daughter is older I'd rather teach her about science by doing a fun "experiment" together than filling out a work sheet.

I'm kinda up in the air about it. I have four children two are in 2nd grade.  I often find it extremely difficult to attend to piles of homework with a busy schedule and two young children, one of them being 5 months. I also enjoy spending that time with my child and seeing what they are learning and feeling like I am apart of that process. We read and constantly are teaching our children new things so with or without out I'm sure all will be well.

Love it! I support homework in like high school. Seven year olds need to play, read, spend time with family.
