Birth control?

So I was on birth control for about 4-5 years, I quit taking it almost a year ago when my boyfriend and I started ttc, he has a 7 year old already, and if we have a child it will be my first, We have had absolutely no luck with it :( but my periods haven't been regular either since I've stopped my BC and they are kind of just now starting to regulate out. Has this happened to anyone else? Could it be because my periods aren't regular? Or maybe I can't have kids? It's been on my mind so much lately.
