What is your take on spanking?

Do you feel that spanking is right or wrong? How will you discipline your child?

My husband and I feel like the lack of discipline is pretty much what is wrong with America now. Too many people have grown up without it. We plan on spanking our child, but we plan to do it after we have calmed down and to do it in a calming matter. When she is a certain age, we will start "grounding" her.

Nope. I don't believe in it and research doesn't support it. Why discipline w violence and pain? Time out, taking away privileges, and rewarding positive behavior is what we use.

I don't believe in spanking. I grew up being spanked and it never helped me to be disciplined or listen to my parents. It just made me fear my father and get better at hiding the bad things I was doing. I think it's much better to explain to a child why something was bad and to teach them why they shouldn't do it and to do that without pain or fear.

Definitely sparking my child when she's old enough to understand, with the same guidelines as you have. I was raised that way, It's how it's done in my culture.

Here's the thing: it's proven time and time again that consistency is the most important factor in discipline. With that said, children respond differently to different forms of discipline. I was spanked on occasion, but my parents always had a level-headed conversation with me first, so that I understood what I had done wrong, and how to avoid it in the future. I rarely needed to be spanked, though, as generally they could mention the problem and I would stop. When we adopted my three little brothers (ages 4, 5, and 9), they tried to avoid anything physical because of the abuse the two younger ones had endured. That worked well for the two older ones. My littlest brother, however, would not respond to verbal discipline, and it had no effect on him when they grounded him. It was months of agony. My parents finally employed spanking, along with reasoning, and his behavior improved. His fits got better, and he has never had anxiety related to the discipline. He is now a well-adjusted 10 year old. While spanking will not be my first resource, it is something I will consider depending on the behavior. 
*Note... I consider spanking two-three hits on a clothed bottom with the palm of a hand. That was always what was done to me. I think that 'whipping' with belts/switches constitutes abuse, especially when it leaves marks on your child. That's anger-based, and teaches them nothing except to react in anger.

It's absolutely wrong. There are ways to set boundaries with children without corporal punishment.

I totally agree with you. Spanking without anger is best. Definitely a disciplinary tool we will utilize, along with grounding for not so bad offenses, with our son and future kids and then grounding and other methods at a certain age.

When it is needed yes my husband and I will spank our children. They are going to know right from wrong. They will be disciplined. I will not be raising horrible little brats that will grow up to be a horrible people the rest of the world has to deal with!

We all see children who completely act a fool in public and think "if only they were my my child!" Or "they need a whooping!  I feel like know one should be able to tell you how to discipline your child as long as you aren't just beating them. Simply talking to your kids doesn't work in everyone's case, if it did the world would be a much better place I believe. I never knew there needed to be research done to show if you should spank your kids or not. Kids will be kids to a certain extent, I respected my parents of course, and growing up in church I definitely did what was right most of the time. The times I did bad, especially when my parents told me not to and I did it anyway, I got a whooping. The whooping was well deserved and I definitely never did it again. Don't judge people for spanking and tell them they shouldn't do it to their kids.
