Does sexual harassment deserve $20 million in compensation?

Just heard on the news that a Fox news reporter (I believe it was Fox, could be wrong) received $20 million for sexual harassment. As a female, I'm certainly not the opposite of a feminist, but really... $20 million... Seems quite exorbitant to me.

According to the Pew Research Center, Fox News profits in 2015 were $1.5 billion. So $20 million isn't really that much. If it is a settlement the agreed to it, correct?

Sure. Sexual harassment is a real and serious issue. If someone was sexually harassed at a mom and pop bakery I doubt they would receive anything but if you're harassed at a multi billion dollar company I would expect a hefty payout. 20 million is nothing to Fox News.

Firstly, we don't know the nature of the assault and can therefore not say weather the reporter "deserved" it or not. Secondly, the fine is supposed to be a punishment and a reminder to not make the same illegal action again. If you were fined $1 for whatever crime it wouldn't make an impact on you, you would have no reason (except morals) to not repeat the crime. I'm assuming the person/company has that kind of money so it's not as shocking as it would be for me or maybe you.

Most of that will go to the lawyers. And it'll be appealed, and cut down from there. Plus, if she were a news anchor/TV host, their salaries are really high, so it might actually be a reflection of that.

It depends on what her earning capacity was and how it was impacted by the entire thing. It's totally possible that this was what she would have made.

Maybe it's related to the company/defendant as a deterrent. A billion dollar  company and/or a millionaire would laugh off a $2000 fine, you know?
