Heart tones

Would they measure the heart beat like beats per minute if there wasn't a heart beat? I had a scan today and was told I would get results from the doctor she also wouldn't show the screen like she said she would and she wouldn't give me a date... I saw her measure because there was a light cover on the ceiling and I saw a reflection
