Is it labor??

Bethany
I had a few gushes of fluid between last night and today, so I called my doctor to find out if maybe my water broke. She sent me to the hospital to be checked and after a few tests they said no, it's not amniotic fluid (however they also said the tests aren't always accurate).
They examined me and said I was almost 3 centimeters dilated and 80% thinned (whatever that means?) and I was having mild contractions but they were inconsistent.  They sent me home and said I should call when my contractions become 5 minutes apart and I shouldn't be smiling at all.
I told them the contractions I was having having felt like a bad period across my lower back and my lower abdomen and my muscles got very tight.
Now I'm afraid to call when I get to 5 minutes apart unless I'm in excruciating pain.  I'm currently around 10 minutes apart (originally they were around once every 20) but they still feel about the same.
Should I go about my evening as normal and just wait for them to wake me up in the middle of the night and time them?
