"I was 20 and living in Sweden. It was winter, meaning unless you're at work or school it's dark outside. I still lived my parents on a small farm with cattle and a few horses.

I was helping my dad and brothers move cattle one night because a fence was broken where they had been grazing, so we couldn't just leave them be there in case they got out. My horse, Destiny, was 3 then and was jumpy and still needed training. So when a calf ran off I had to go case it while my dad and brothers stayed with the rest of the cattle. After a few kilometers I lost track of the calf in the dense forest. We were walking on a small path and I only had the small light on my helmet and a larger one in my saddlebag. I couldn't see squat and decided to get the big one out. There was a lot of wild animals there so I wasn't surprised when Destiny stopped to look around. I thought it might have been the calf so I jumped off and tied her to a tree. I found the calf behind a bush, it was still alive but barely. The belly and chest was cut open, intestines covered the ground. I almost threw up instantly. It groaned and I grabbed my knife to put it down, but while I was doing that I heard a twig snap behind me.

There's two things that step on branches in the woods, bears and people, and there were no bears this far south. I turned around and saw a tall figure with deer horns by a tree. The eyes glowed and I froze. It moved in between trees closer and I snapped out of it. I threw the flash light at it to scare it while I ran back to Destiny. I heard it scream and hiss while I ran. I didn't look back. I didn't want to. She was stomping her feet, clearly upset when I got to her. I didn't have time to untie her but just cut her rope when the blood knife I used to kill the calf. I threw myself on her and she took off. I couldn't see but didn't care. I let her run back in the direction we came as fast as she could. Even as young as she was she stopped one we reached the herd, which was in the barn by then. I told my dad everything and he looked pale, he grabbed his gun and went around the barn a few times on his horse. He and I stayed in the barn that night armed and afraid the thing would come kill the cattle. Luckily it didn’t.

The next day we took a small tractor to pick up the remains which we couldn't leave there because it was next to a jogging track. We found it but it was nothing but bones left, not even skin. I even found my flash light which looked like it had been crushed. I am so glad Destiny didn't panic that night because the rope I had tied her with was designed to break if tugged hard enough. I don't know what would have happened if she had decided to bolt. I'm also glad my dad took me seriously."
