and now I understand.....

I know this topic as been beat to death, but today it really hit close to home, so I thought I'd share.
We every so often have a topic posted about media representation ( or lack there of  )of  POC, normally I glance at them but it's not something I truly every cared about. It was one of those things that I shrugged of as" it is what it is" . But today it hit home. On Sunday's I have a "wash day" routine with my daughter (3 years old), it usually involves deep conditioning, shampooing and conditioning her hair followed by styling it. Today I put a two-strand twist style in it and when I was done she touched it and had a full melt down. Of course I asked he what wrong, and she told me " I want my hair to be like Cinderella" (Cinderella is her favorite movie, she watches it several times a week) so I asked her how she wants it like Cinderella, she said "smaller" so I said "Well baby girl I can't make your hair smaller, your hair is big and curly and beautiful" . She continued to cry, went in her room, and calmed herself. But I felt broken and hurt for my little girl. The princesses she loves sadly don't represent her reality.
This is why representation in the media is so important, what I once shrugged off just hit me back in the face.
