Crib mobiles?

I can't decide whether to get a crib mobile or not or if it is too distracting to get them to sleep?

I made one myself. They seem kind of unnecessary and expensive to me. It cost me maybe $5 to make. I have one of those little Einstein fish tanks for the side of the crib from my first son. He really liked it.

I found out the hard way with my first baby with the mobile yes they are cute and complete the look to the nursery however they are expensive and most of them are just a few twists and they play for 30 sec and then they are done so save your money and put it towards something else. The one I bought was 50 bucks and I wish i hadn't . What I do recommend is the little Einstein sea fish tank it mounts to the side of the crib and plays for 30 mins and after each 10 mins it dims the music and light till it fades out . I can't exactly rememeber the name but it's made by baby Einstein and it's the only crib soother they have thats a fish tank. I know u can get it at Amazon, target, Walmart , and babies r us. Little spendy but so worth it my kiddo is almost 2 and finds comfort in it when he has nightmares at night .

When my nephew was little we got him a little projector that hung on the crib rail that played a little song and projected some stars and images on the ceiling.  He really liked it and seemed to be able to get drift off to sleep on his own (without being rocked/cuddled/fed)  with it on. I think I'll get something similar for my little one rather than a standard mobile.

We were gifted one with black and white cards you switch out when my son was around two months old. It really helped having a place I could lay him down safely where he'd be content to just hang out and watch it for a few minutes so I could take a speed shower or fix my lunch. I've seen plenty of babies fall asleep watching mobiles, it's hypnotizing. I'm trying for anything that can help my baby sleep this time, so I'm getting one. If she finds it too distracting then I'll put it over her changing table instead.

My oldest slept in a bassinet in my room for several months before moving to her own room and crib, which did have a mobile. I think if she had been in her room earlier, it might have been good. But by the time she got in there (6-7 months), it was waaaaay too distracting, even when it was off. And like other people mentioned, you wind it up and it lasts for all of three minutes. I got a "sleep sheep" that I sat in the chair next to her crib. It played soothing music for up to 30 music and worked a lot better than the mobile. I did not buy or register for a mobile with this baby, but I did register for another sleep sheep!

It's not too distracting for sleep. 
Babies love to look at things. It doesn't have to be fancy and play music. 
Infants best see contrasting colors. So black and white and such, because they are so different, it really draws their eye. 
Visually stimulating things like that really help their brain development

I am skipping it, they are too expensive for what they are. You can always give them plenty of visual stimulation in the time they are awake with good toys or books.
