Glitz Pageants, Am I Missing Something?

Question

Randomly fell into a Toddlers & Tiaras hole while working around the house and ended up clearing at least 7 episodes.

Now that I've found my way back, I surprisingly still can't decide how I feel about the existence of Glitz pageants for toddlers.

How beneficial can it be to teach kids 0-3 yrs  what failure feels like? Am I looking at this the wrong way?

I feel like pageants take away from children; kids need to be kids and making them wear makeup, dress up and compete takes away from their childhood and teaches them that winning is everything. I would never enter my little girl into a pageant. She's beautiful just the way she is!

I also watched loads of this, it's like a sick fascination.. I think it's creepy and some of it sort of sexualises the children and the whole thing freaks me out.

It seems like it's more for the parent than anything. These kids shouldn't be introduced to makeup, tanning, teeth whitning, fake hair, fake nails, everything that is suppose to make you look better! And they shouldn't learn that this girl won because she's prettier than you, you releize what that can put on a girl especially on a very young toddler? They should be out playing in the grass and dirt! Not tanning and doing there hair to win a pageant.

I'm pro pageants. But the whole spray tan, flippers, makeup thing I'm not sure about. Maybe a little makeup is ok. But they go to the extremes.

If my kid wanted to do it than I'd absolutely let them but I would never let them be consumed by it.

I don't get it. I've never seen that specific show, but there's something about pageants that make me uncomfortable. I wouldn't enter a child in one.

My mom use to shove us girls into things like that when we were younger. I did not like it at all. I won some... I lost some.... My mother did it for the experience she felt it was good to teach us to stay humble and also deal with failure. She had us stop once we got to a certain age. My moms sister pitched a major attitude when we stopped..I'm against pageants. But if I ever had child who wanted to do it if allow it.
