the massage after childbirth

This is something I dread more than anything when it comes to giving birth. The part when they come in over and over again and massage your uterus to get everything out. So I have questions for you mothers, does it hurt as bad as I've been told? I know the benifits from it but is it ABSOLUTELY necessary? Can you tell them no?
