"Performing" pregnancy 🙅🏻
NYTimes had an article today "When you look pregnant but you're not" that had an interesting premise- when people perceive you are pregnant (whether you are or not) it opens a doorway for comments, gestures and even touches that may not be welcome, all because society expects a pregnant woman to "perform" the role of pregnancy for any and all that inquire it of her. Interesting side note that famed author Chimamanda Ngozi was recently pregnant and didn't tell anyone based on her disinterest in the performative demands of going public about it. I am a very private person, especially when it comes to matters of my health or body; so this topic hits home for me. Next time someone asks when I'm due maybe I will say "I am not performing my pregnancy at this time, thanks!" Lol.
