when i go in for my following check up i'll be 12w 2d, and i go to take the NIPT. what is it basically? and could they tell the sex of the baby?

Answer

Non-invasive prenatal testing. If you opt to do it they will send out your blood and look for markers that indicate the baby might have a genetic issue. This testing is a screening tool, not a diagnostic tool and is not very accurate. It is coupled with the nuchal translucency test via ultrasound where they measure fluid or space at the back of the babies neck. Traditional NIPT does not test for gender, but you can ask about the Harmony test. It's not covered by insurance but it is far more accurate at predicting genetic issues and can also tell you the gender. Rather than looking at markers in mom's blood it actually takes pieces of the baby's DNA that are found in mom's blood. Hope that helps!
