My Birth Story (long)
It took me a little bit of time to remember everything fully and I still don't remember every detail because of how many different meds I was on and had been on. My son is now almost 3 weeks old. Everything started on August 18. I had my regular prenatal appointment and was told I had leukocytes in my urine sample. I didn't think much of this because the doctor didn't seem concerned. I had my shower that weekend and wasn't feeling great but I thought it was from traveling 3 hours away and then not getting a lot of sleep. Monday I started to think I had a uti but decided to wait it out just a little longer because of how unconcerned the doctor was. Tuesday night while I was at work I got a really bad pain in my hip and called in to the after hours line with my ob. The doctor I spoke with said it was probably how my son was laying and didn't seem concerned about my sample as well. Same thing happened Wednesday night. The pain made it so I couldn't walk and felt like I was going to be sick. I went home and took a warm bath and went to bed. I woke up Thursday morning with horrible back pain and the same hip pain. I decided to go to the hospital because I had a gut feeling that I had a kidney infection as I have now had 3 in my life. When I got there they hooked me up to a monitor and we noticed that I was contracting. I was then checked and I was already 1.5cm dialated and 50% effaced. I was also bleeding. The doctor was concerned because I was only 34 weeks and shouldn't be having any changes at that time. I got something to stop my contractions and was kept overnight to get antibiotics. When I was checked the next morning I hadn't dialated more but I was up to 75% effaced. It was at that time that they decided to transfer me to a different hospital as the one I was at didn't have a NICU and there was a strong possibility that my son was going to be making an appearance sooner rather than later. After getting transferred I was not allowed to get out of my bed for over 24 hours to make sure that everything was ok as well as I was on magnesium. My contractions seemed to have stopped so I got moved out of a labor and delivery room and into a regular room. Unfortunately I started contracting again so back I went to labor and delivery. I got fluids to help stop my contractions as well as I had to keep switching positions to try to help my son. As the night went on every time I had a contraction his heart rate decreased. I would actually hear it decrease then start to feel the contraction. My contractions never really hurt either. They were just a really strong tightening in my entire abdomen. The doctor came in at about 8:30 and said that we would be having a baby today. So they started to get me prepped for a c section (he was breech as well) and my husband and I got in touch with family so those who were local could make their way to the hospital. At 11:52 Benjamin Paul made his entrance and promptly relieved himself on the doctor. He weighed 5lbs 13oz and was 18" long. There were concerns about him before he was here because he was early but he let out a nice loud cry in the operating room and immediately tried to nurse once we were in the recovery room together. His blood sugar dropped so they gave him some formula to get it back up. His bilirubin levels were elevated so we started supplementing with formula to get his levels down while we waited for my milk to come in. We thought for a little bit before he was born that he was going to have a nicu stay then we thought that he was going to have to stay after I got released. The good news is he came home with me. We had to wake him up every 2 hours to eat while I pumped because he wasn't waking up himself. I am very happy to announce though that after his pediatrician appointment Wednesday he is up to 6lbs 5oz and we are now off the every two hour schedule as well as he is completely on the breast unless he needs a little something extra (he is tongue tied and lip tied so he has some trouble getting everything he needs off the breast). We have only had to do a few supplement bottles since we made the switch. I am still pumping a few times a day in hopes that I can get a freezer stash going for us then I want to donate any surplus since we were almost in the nicu and I know that we could have needed donor milk.
