Baby shower gift etiquette?

Quick question! My brother-in-law and his wife are expecting their first baby 5 weeks after we're expecting ours. My sister-in-law purchased gifts off of my registry, totaling x amount of dollars. I was looking at her registry today to get an idea of what to purchase my niece or nephew, and I started wondering about what kind of spending is appropriate in this kind of situation. Obviously I want to spend the same amount on her baby as she did on mine, but she and my brother-in-law are pretty well off whereas my husband and I are going through financially tight times. Should I suck it up and spend more money than I really have available to spend, or would it be appropriate to choose some lower dollar items off of her registry to go along with the baby blanket I already handmade for her?

You should spend only what you are comfortable with spending.  Get what you would have gotten if you didn't know what she was getting you.
Do not feel obligated to spend more than you are comfortable with especially when your financial situations are different.

Give the hand made gifts and choose something little. If you are really worried about it tho talk to her and you BIL about it I'm sure they will understand

That would be totally acceptable. Just think how much time you will have spent making a blanket. If you added up the number of hours at your hourly wage at work, that would be a lot! Something handmade is so much more special.
When we had our daughter, my sister in law used wool from my husbands grandma who had dementia so couldn't do it herself and knitted a blanket. It meant so much more than expensive gifts. We didn't want a baby shower, but people bought gifts when she was born.

I would spend what you can afford and give them the baby blanket ( I love when people make me things). If you feel like you should say something, I would say " we wish that we could give you more but we can't right now"

Yes. You know how awesome it is that my baby gets to use blankets my husband used his great grandmother made!! How special it will be "your aunty made this for you". Maybe make him/her hat and booties to match if you know how!
