My parents already had grandparent names but my hubby's mom picked nana. His dad said my daughter would choose, so I always called him pops around her because I thought that would be cute 😜 so that's what she calls him 😂

When I was a kid, my parents told us what to call our grandparents, I believe, based on what they wanted to be called. We called them those names. However my stepson was told to call his biological maternal grandmother Grammy & his biological paternal grandmother Nana, they both live in other states & he sees them twice a year for a week or so @ a time. He calls them both Grammy, we think for awhile he  maybe thought they were the same person & now the names have just stuck. His step grandmother (my mom) he still calls Kathleen even though his Dad & I have been married for almost 2 years, my mom always introduces him as her grandson, & he sees her usually at least once a month. My mom would love to be called Nonna & we've tried encouraging him to call her Nonna Kathleen but with any names whether they be of a person or a thing he will decide what they're called & never change his mind. It will be interesting to see what will happen once my baby girl (due in Feb.) starts talking. If he hears her calling my mom Nonna will he do it too or will him calling my mom Kathleen make my baby do the same!?

In my experience the oldest grandchild usually sets the tone for that. My older cousin started Mama/Papa before I was born, although I usually called Mama, Grandma. She was both to me depending on the day lol.

My best friend, her brother & sister all had babies the same year & the oldest of the 3 started Mimi.

It depends, grandparents can choose but parents should have the right to veto if it's something ridiculous.
At the end of the day, the kid will call the grandparents what they want to.
