What is considered labor. I see women say they were in labor for multiple days and I've always wondered what is actually considered the start of labor

Labor is when you have contractions that are actively dilating your cervix. Active labor (at my hospital) is after your water breaks.

Labour is where your uterus contracts regularly - it dilates your cervix and pushes baby further down the birth canal.

You can be in slow labour for weeks sometimes (I was!!!)
But established labour for me 4cm onwards in the UK I was in labour for 48 hours, my water was only broken for 12 hours 2 mins before baby came into world.

I was in labour technically for 4 days total. But I just talk about "labour" as in to mean how long I was in active labour for (4cm onwards) which was 17 hours.

I was induced on Monday had contractions right thru but they only class me in labour for 8 hours on the Friday (hard pill to swallow when you've had no sleep for 5 days ) 
They class labour as 4 cm dilated with regular contractions over here

From what I understood in childbirth class its when your uterus begins to contract and dialation and the thinning of the cervix begins.
