How to dress a newborn in the winter ?

I am FTM and I have no idea how I should dress my newborn for the cold weather. How many layers ? Like basic bodysuit and actual outfit or jumpsuit ? And a hat and socks ?

A good rule of thumb is the number of layers you wear plus one. So long sleeves, pants and jacket for you. Same for baby plus a blanket.

Typically long sleeve onesie, long pants, socks, and blanket in the house. If we go out then I add  a light jacket, hat, and have a blanket over carseat.  NO PUFFY CLOTHES IN CARSEAT!

I babywear, so baby is close to my body (gets my body heat), then wrap is over her (another layer), then I use an oversized fleece jacket.

Add one layer more than you. If you have no jacket and its cool use thin jacket. If you use jacket. Baby gets jacket and blanket. But use common sense dont over layer baby. If your cold baby is colder. As they get older they can control their temp better. If i use jack and blanket for baby i also cover car seat to prevent wind on babys face.

I find we generally tend to overdress babies in winter! But it is hard not to as they can't say anything. I was always told you could probably skip at least one layer of what you put on. For me a body is a must, then it depends on whether you are carrying baby, if baby is in the pram and how cold it actually is. If in a pram, you can use one of those sleeping bag things which keeps them nice and warm. A hat is must though as the lose heat via their head.

Start practicing your swaddling skills!  Im preggo with my second kiddo and a pediatric OT.  I can tell u keeping your baby swaddled while you're home is the best thing u can do for the baby and yourself!  I highly recommend purchasing the miracle blanket.  I would put a layer of clothes on and swaddle my first son when at home. Always put a hat on too.  Fist baby was born sept, next due in nov. =)

Layers:) every baby is different..my son is a very warm kid, I looked like a terrible mom but he would be sweating when I put way to much on him! Just always have socks and a light hat on them when out side and always have a blanket on you:)

Onesie, sleeper/outfit, and winter cozy cover/ car seat cover will do. My son was born in March in Michigan and came home during a snow storm. This is what I put on him and a blanket when we went outside. You can buy a snowsuit/coat/jacket but you have to deal with taking it off and on in carseat. I wish you the best mamas!
