Hospital stay after birth?

How long is it typical for them to keep you in the hospital after you deliver if everything goes well? I've read that 2 nights is normal, but also have a friend who went home the same day.

Here it's 48 hours after the time you gave birth vaginally and 72 hours if you have a c-section.

My friend stayed 2 nights (one being the night she gave birth). She would have been released the next day but they wanted to monitor the baby extra.

With my oldest (adopted), her birth mom had a very smooth delivery and baby was perfectly healthy, so both were discharged after 24 hours. With my sister's kids (different doctor and hospital), she had two good deliveries and two perfect kids, and she was discharged 48 hours later with both. I think it depends on the doctor, hospital, and general situation.

I know that by law insurance has to cover a stay of at least 48 hours for a vaginal delivery and 96 hours for a c-section. (Not sure if those numbers start once you check in or once the baby is delivered though?) Doesn't mean you have to stay that long if your doctor is cool with you leaving, but your insurance can't cut off before then.

Where do you live? At my hospital here in the UK, they keep you in for 6 hours after normal delivery for monitoring. I was kept in overnight with my 1st baby as I had to have a episiotomy and forcep delivery and I lost alot of blood after.

At my hospital 24 hours after birth is the norm. We stayed for 3 days with my first since was born with a fever.

I had to stay for 2 nights with my first. My sister has gone home within 24hrs with all 3 of her kids.

Everyone I know in our area, if everything is normal and both mom and baby are healthy they'll discharge 24 hours after birth.

I went home after 36 hours. I would have stayed the second night but both my daughter and myself were cleared to go home. (This includes induction/labor/recovery)

I'm hoping for the same this time around, but it's with a new doctor and a different hospital.

Typical is 2 nights for an uncomplicated vaginal delivery.
