I just got tested for GBS today at the dr's appointment. How common is it and what causes it ?

It's normal bacteria that lives in your digestive tract - true numbers aren't known because the tests for it aren't very accurate (lots of false negatives)  but it's estimated that somewhere between 20-30% of the population carry it. For most it is completely harmless, but in some cases it can cause infection and in babies the infection can be dangerous.  If you are a carrier and having a vaginal delivery you should be given iv antibiotics during labour to protect the baby. 
I found the website www.gbss.org.uk really helpful and informative after I was diagnosed with a gbs infection.

I think it's about 25% of women have it. There's zero concern, it's just one of the bacterias we carry, unless of course, you're getting ready to have a vaginal birth. It's not anything that's sexually transmitted, it's just something some people have. We all have a different biome...
