it won't go in

my boyfriend and i are sexually active and have only done it once. we have tried multiple times beforehand but, it would not go in before he would get soft again. he isn't that large but, my vagina is quite small. it was so much effort to even get it in that we didn't even get to appreciate the sex that much. i was on top and it was not working for either of us. what do?
