I'm 19 and I've found a guy who I really like and he likes me, but my family doesn't like him for the simple fact that he's African American. I told them everything about him and they completely approved, till I mentioned his race and they completely changed their minds. I don't know what to do...

Do what you want and be with who you want. For them to change their minds and disapprove of him just because he is African American is nothing short of racist.

If you're an adult, who cares, because they have no say so. Not liking him because of the color of his skin is racist. It doesn't determine how he will treat you. My husband is black and he treats me like a queen.

I don't think disapproval based on race is right. However, the way you go about dating him will have a big impact on your relationship with your family. They are your family and unfortunately we don't get to choose our family. Invite him over, introduce them to one another. Make them love him. Speak about him affectionately and talk about the lovely things he does for you. Be open and honest about your relationship(don't hide when you're going out with him etc). Most importantly, do not tell them about little arguments or pet peeves you might have about him. Those will only make them feel more strongly about their dislike of him or base his behaviour on his race. Be impartial and don't disrespect either party. Their both important to you. ✌🏽️✌🏽️

My dad grew up in a town where there were a total of 3 African Americans and the n word was used freely and no one ever thought anything about it. My dad was also raised that races do not mix when dating (guess it was religious I never really understood). For the longest time all I have dated was African Americans and I'm not going to lie it took my dad some time to come around. But finally looked at me one day and told me that it didn't matter what race the man was as long as he treated me like a queen then he would always be accepting. Now I am with my boyfriend of 2 years who happens to be african America and expecting our first child and my dad could not be happier.
