Prenup Or? Opinions!

My SO and I were talking about prenups last night (it was on AHS) and he started saying how he doesn't think they're a bad idea and he would consider. Well, I said I wouldn't sign one. I'm not going anywhere and if we did split, I would want nothing. I'm not the type to screw someone over or be spiteful. I told him millionaires and shit have prenups, I don't think middle class people have them. He said "I just want to save my ass in case you screw me over". Like, what the fuck? What are your views on prenups?

I think they're a good idea in a lot of cases, not just for millionaires. For example, anyone who owns a business as a sole proprietor should have one because even if a divorce is very unlikely, if it happens the ex could destroy their business either intentionally or not by trying to split their assets.
I would just feel safer with one. I've seen how messy divorce can get and it puts me off on the idea of marriage altogether. So I think a prenuptial agreement would be one of the few things to help make me more comfortable with the idea of getting married. They just make divorce easier, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're anticipating divorce.

I wouldn't sign one. To me a prenup is a backup plan for your marriage to fail. My marriage failing is not an option. If you are worried about losing a certain amount of money or things if you get divorced then you probably should marry that person anyway.

Both me and my husband have a prenup.  We both wanted one and it had nothing to do with thinking our marriage was going to fail.  We are and have been best friends since we were 10 years old.  We wanted one to make sure if anything did happen we both would protect our assets.

We both watched our parents' marriages fail miserably, and I was married before when I was really young to a man who was not nice for a very short time and that ended extremely ugly.  He tried to take everything I had away from me after years of abuse and cheating.  I had filed for divorce and wanted nothing from him but he and his new girlfriend saw me as their money ticket.  He nearly destroyed everything I had worked so hard for.

I like having a prenup now because all that worry is already out of the way.  My husband and I have a strong marriage and friendship and plan to build on that for the rest of our lives.  But I'm also know if something ever happened we would both be very emotional.  Our prenup outlines what we would do in the event that we are having trouble, what steps we would take to repair the relationship first and divorce as a last resort.

I don't think I could marry someone if I felt like I needed a pre-nup with them. I know some people that probably wish they would have had them but they'd probably agree that they never should have gotten married in the first place. I totally get it for millionaires like you said but otherwise, I don't see the point

I just asked this question too because my boyfriend is demanding one. Why is it that guys are okay with prenups and girls aren't? Seems like they are the ones who act like they want to give up and leave a marriage

If you're sure you wouldn't want to leave or take anything from him why not sign one? I think it's fair to want to enter a contractual relationship (marriage) knowing it's for only the right reasons.

I think they're a good exercise to do. This way, you both sit down and from putting together a prenup, you'll find out A LOT about each other and your respective expectations. You may not even need to sign anything after this discussion exercise. A couple of my GFs were the ones who wanted prenups, as they had businesses/more assets than their fiancés and wanted to protect all of their hard work.

My husband and I don't have one but with our first child on the way, we'll be seeing a lawyer as we want to ensure that our child's future (financially, guardianship, etc) is taken care of and according to our wishes, no matter what happens to us or between us.

I think it's a good idea. You never know people, no matter how much you think you do. They can be the most loving, loyal, sweet and romantic partner one day and the opposite next. We aren't in Little House on the Prarie days. We live in a society of short attention spans. Upgrade your phone every 2 years, your car every 3 and your SO whenever you get the itch. Protect yourself.
