IUD..... = abortion? 😱😰

Question

I was talking with a friend about birth control and my friend is on the pills and I have the Skyla iud. She proceeded to tell me that iud's allow the egg to be fertilized and then your body aborts the fertilized egg, an abortion. 
She didn't know about the Skyla but she was talking about the Mirena. Now mirena and Skyla both have hormones that go straight into your cervix and thicken your mucus so the sperm can't fertilize the egg- that's the research I found on it. 
What was she talking about then? What iud does that? Anyone heard of this?

Mirena works the same way as the pill. Your friend has some way outdated information.

A fertilised egg DOES NOT equal a pregnancy.

Pregnancy ONLY occurs when a fertilised egg implants into the uterine wall.

NO birth control causes an abortion.

NO BIRTH CONTROL CAUSES AN ABORTION.

Birth control works in a few ways to PREVENT pregnancy:

1. By thickening cervical mucus.
2. By stopping ovulation.
3. By making it harder for sperm to swim.
4. By thinning uterine lining.

Some IUDs can be used as emergency contraceptive if that's what she was thinking of.. as in, if you have unprotected sex & get an IUD implanted like RIGHT AWAY, it can serve a similar function as a Plan B pill (although in addition to preventing the pregnancy from taking, it would provide ongoing protection from that point forward).

Realistically, not many people use it as an emergency contraceptive, but that may have been what she was thinking of.

(To be clear, emergency contraception is not the same as an abortion.)
